MailStore, the feature-packed email archiving solution, has been updated with new features and enhancements for better security, performance, and an overall better user experience. Here’s a brief overview of these improvements.
Refreshed look for Outlook Add-in: Updated Icons for consistency with the latest versions of Outlook
The MailStore Outlook Add-in has been redesigned with a more modern look for better integration with newer versions of Outlook.
Improved Archive Performance
Improvements in the way MailStore handles archive stores internally have resulted in improved performance of mailbox archiving by up to 20 percent over earlier versions.
Easy access to setup guides in the Exchange archiving wizard
When configuring archiving for Microsoft Exchange, links to helpful online resources have been added for all supported versions of Microsoft Exchange and Office 365.
New folder structure options for export profiles
Improvements to export profiles now allow emails to be exported into specific, user-defined folders without replicating the archive folder structure. This provides easier handling of exported emails and helps avoid issues caused by restrictions on the export destinations (such as limitations on the export target’s maximum folder depth).
Removed support for older Windows platforms
MailStore is no longer supported on versions of Windows that are no longer supported by Microsoft (Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008 Standard or Windows Small Business Server 2008).
Orphaned archives shown on Privileges screen
Orphaned archives (those that do not have a user associated with them) are now shown on the “Archives and Privileges Overview” section of the “Users and Archives” configuration screen.
A “Print Message” button has been added to the Outlook Add-in.
Audit Log: Copy to clipboard now includes event details.
SMTP Settings: Support for multiple recipients (comma separated email addresses) has been added.
Thunderbird Support: MailStore warns users that archiving may be incomplete due to IMAP-backed Thunderbird profile.
jQuery security update to address potential XSS vulnerability.
Quick export of saved search results via context menu has been added.
With 2019 coming to a close, I’d like to announce a few product updates. 2020 is going to be an exciting year for new features, but until then, we’ve made a few improvements in MDaemon, MDaemon Connector for Outlook, and Security Gateway for Email Servers.
New Security Features
Macro Detection in Email Attachments
A common tactic used by scammers to distribute malware is to send emails containing attachments with a message asking the user to enable macros. In fact, this tactic has been used extensively by the Emotenet botnet during its recent resurgence after a period of inactivity. Once enabled, these macros can unleash malware that destroys your data or infiltrates your network. To help protect users from these threats, a new option was added to MDaemon Antivirus and SecurityGateway to detect macros in documents scanned by Cyren AV and flag them as infected for further review by the administrator.
Authentication Failure & Frozen Account Reports
To help users maintain awareness of unauthorized account access attempts, a new setting was added to MDaemon’s Dynamic Screening feature to notify the user after a given number of failed authentication attempts or after the account has been frozen.
Regulations & Backup/Restore Features
Email Archiving in SecurityGateway
Any business that has lost data to a malware attack or suffered fines for not meeting regulatory requirements will benefit from a solid backup and recovery solution. To help businesses meet these needs, archiving was added to SecurityGateway. Advanced searching options make it easy to find archived messages based on the sender, recipient, message subject, message content, date range, attachment, and much more.
Businesses that need to meet regulatory and compliance requirements or provide document retention for litigation requests can use SecurityGateway’s new Journaling feature. Journaling creates a backup copy of every email sent and received, along with a summary of the message’s sender, recipient, subject, and date, and stores it in a separate mailbox that cannot be accessed by end users.
New Data Leak Prevention Rules
Your data is your business’ most valuable asset, so if it lands in the wrong hands, it could lead to devastating financial losses as well as a loss of trust. To help businesses keep confidential data such as credit card numbers, Social Security numbers, and bank account numbers from being stolen over 60 new data leak prevention rules were added to SecurityGateway to protect against transmission of a wider variety of sensitive data.
Saved Searches in MDaemon Webmail
Over the past year, we added new features to MDaemon Webmail to help users stay organized, including automatic creation of “All Unread” and All Flagged” saved searches. When you log into MDaemon Webmail, you’ll receive a pop-up message asking you if you’d like to create these saved searches. Simply confirm to add them to your folders list.
Expired Webmail Session Notifications
If you’ve been logged into MDaemon Webmail for a period of time, you may not have noticed your session has expired. Beginning with MDaemon 19, MDaemon Webmail will display (EXPIRED) on the browser tab to help notify users that they’ve been logged out without having to switch tabs.
New Mobile Theme for MDaemon Webmail
Most of us are using our phones more than we’re using our desktop to check email, and you shouldn’t have to sacrifice features for the convenience of anywhere access. To address these needs, MDaemon Webmail’s mobile theme has been redesigned with a more modern look, plus a variety of new features previously only found in desktop themes. New email management features include email templates, personalized categories, drag & drop email filters, an email signature editor with support for multiple signatures, deferred delivery, message snooze, message recall, and sorting options.
Calendar features for the new Mobile Webmail theme include importing and exporting in CSV or ICS (iCal) format, support for external calendars, private access links, simultaneous multi-calendar view, and much more.
Businesses with higher email usage environments will benefit from these new features for SecurityGateway.
64-Bit Version of SecurityGateway
This year, we added a 64-bit version of SecurityGateway. This allows 64-bit operating systems to take advantage of the extra processing power that’s achieved by allowing more operations to be performed at a time. The 64-bit version can handle a higher volume of active connections for improved performance.
External Database Support in SecurityGateway
External database support has been added to SecurityGateway, so you’re no longer limited to using the built-in Firebird database. When an external Firebird database is used, multiple items can access the database at the same time, which helps improve performance.
Support for Multiple SSL Certificates
In the past, when adding a new domain and host name to an existing MDaemon server, administrators had to remove and re-create the SSL certificate, or re-issue the third-party certificate. In 2019 we added support for Server Name Indication (SNI) to MDaemon. With SNI, each host name can have its own SSL certificate, which means you no longer have to delete and re-create existing certificates and share them among new domains/host names. Simply create the new SSL certificate & assign it to the new host name.
Centralized Management of Email Signatures
If your business allows users to create their own email signatures, you may have noticed there’s no consistency, with variations in text formatting, images, or overall layout of the signature. In MDaemon 19.5, we added support for centralized management of email signatures.

MDaemon Connector for Outlook (formerly Outlook Connector for MDaemon) has new features, too!
Outlook Connector has been re-branded as MDaemon Connector for Outlook, and, beginning with MDaemon 18, is now included with MDaemon as a licensed feature (via purchase of separate license).
Therefore, in the latest version of MDaemon, a separate download is not required on the MDaemon server. Simply enter your MDaemon Connector license key via Help | Register your MDaemon Products to activate MDaemon Connector for Outlook. Features introduced after version 4.5 include:
“Expired password” or “password change required” notification for end users
Administrator control over which Outlook add-ins are allowed or disabled
Junk Email folder / Blocked Senders support
S/MIME support for message signing and encryption
MDaemon Connector configuration reports for administrators, with Outlook send/receive schedules for all accounts.
Centrally-managed send/receive schedules
Nearing/over quota alerts for end users
New database management tools to help administrators maintain optimal performance
This week, we released version 19 of the MDaemon Email Server, with new features that benefit administrators and end users. The following is a summary of key improvements for email security and productivity. You can view the complete list of new features and updates in the MDaemon release notes.
New MDaemon Email Server Features for Administrators
One of the first things administrators will notice is that the behavior of the “Start MDaemon” Start menu shortcut has changed. When clicked, you’ll now be taken to MDaemon Remote Administration via your browser. If you’d like to launch the MDaemon Email Server console directly, you can use the “Open MDaemon Configuration Session” shortcut, as shown here:
Enhanced Integration with Third-Party Plugins
MDaemon’s XML-API has been expanded to include additional capabilities. Folders and their contents can be created, deleted, renamed, and moved using the API. Developers can use these expanded features to display or manipulate the content of user mailboxes.
“External Message” Warning
A new “External Sender” Content Filter condition has been added, along with a new “Add a warning to the top of the message” action. This allows MDaemon administrators to create a rule that will add a custom warning to the top of all email messages originating from external sources – providing extra protection against phishing attempts by alerting users to treat these messages with extra care.
Support for Separate SSL Certificates for Each Host/Domain
MDaemon supports TLS Server Name Indication (SNI). This allows domains and host names to have their own assigned SSL/TLS certificate, rather than having to share a single certificate.
New Authentication Failure & Frozen Account Reports
MDaemon’s Dynamic Screening feature includes the option to send authentication failure and frozen account reports to end users. When a given number of authentication failures has been reached, or when an account has been frozen, the user is notified so that corrective action can be taken.
New MDaemon Email Server Features for End Users
MDaemon Webmail – “All Unread” and “All Flagged” Saved Searches
When logging in for the first time, MDaemon Webmail users will receive a prompt asking if they would like to create an “All Unread” and “All Flagged” saved search for convenient, one-click access to unread or important email messages.
MDaemon Webmail – Expired Session Indicator
MDaemon Webmail will display (EXPIRED) on the browser tab when a user’s session has expired. This allows users who have multiple browser tabs open to be notified when they have been logged out of MDaemon Webmail without having to switch tabs.
Other MDaemon Email Server Improvements Include:
Autodiscover support has been expanded to accommodate a wider variety of connecting email clients (including eM Client, Thunderbird, Outlook, and others). The service can also now be configured to pass a custom host name to the connecting client on a per-service basis (for example: administrators can configure ActiveSync to connect to activesync.domain.com and IMAP to connect to imap.domain.com, etc.).
The option “Only send antivirus update notification on failure” is now enabled by default, and when updating to MDaemon 19, it will be enabled the first time MDaemon starts up.
When ActiveSync is disabled for a domain, administrators will receive a pop-up asking if they would like to revoke ActiveSync access for users of the selected domain. This makes it easier to revoke access and reduces the usage of ActiveSync licenses.
The STARTTLS White List now takes precedence over the STARTTLS Required List and the “SMTP server requires STARTTLS on MSA port” option.
New options have been added to Security | Spam Filter | Spam Honeypots and Security | Security Settings | Screening | SMTP Screen to enable/disable the Dynamic Screening notification when an IP is blocked.
These are the main highlights. For a complete list of new features & enhancements in the latest MDaemon Email Server, please see the MDaemon release notes. Dropbox Integration for Webmail Users, Popular IM Client Connections, Support for Let’s Encrypt, new Message Scheduling, and More!
Businesses around the world have depended on the reliability and security of MDaemon for over 20 years.
With the release of MDaemon 17, we’ve included additional security features and introduced several new features for WorldClient, MDaemon’s feature-packed web-based email client.
Below, you’ll find a summary of key new features. A more comprehensive list of all new features and enhancements can be found in the MDaemon release notes on the MDaemon Download page.
New Security Features
MDaemon Health Check Utility
MDaemon’s new health check utility will analyze all security-related settings and display a report of each feature that is not configured with the recommended setting. This report includes the name of the feature, the current setting for that feature, its recommended setting, and the GUI path to the setting. Administrators can select an entry in the report and click on “Set to Recommended” to re-configure the selected feature with the recommended setting, or by holding down CTRL or SHIFT, multiple items can be selected and re-configured simultaneously.
Enhanced Password Security
An option has been added to store mailbox passwords using non-reversible encryption. This protects the passwords from being decrypted by MDaemon, the administrator, or a possible attacker.
WorldClient Instant Messenger now uses the XMPP protocol for instant messaging instead of WorldClient’s proprietary protocol. This gives users more chat client options (those that support XMPP), especially when wanting to use mobile chat clients to connect with MDaemon users on their desktop.
WorldClient users now have the option of sending a message at a later date and time. This feature is located under the Advanced button in the message compose window. Simply select the desired date and time in the new drop-down menus, and then click on Send. For more information on how to enable this feature, please see the MDaemon release notes.
Support for Multiple Email Signatures
WorldClient now supports multiple email signatures. This is useful in situations where a user has additional aliases for his account, such as firstname.lastname@example.org, etc. A default signature can be assigned to the user’s primary email address and to each alias. When composing a message, users can use the default signature assigned to the email address (or alias) currently used, or choose from among their other signatures via the Advanced button in the message Compose window.
Easily Share Contacts with Other Email Clients
When using the LookOut or WorldClient themes, WorldClient users can now import vCards (.vcf files) into their default contacts folder. vCards enable users to send and receive contact information in a format that can be easily read in other email programs. A vCard may contain a contact’s name, title, phone number, email address, mailing address, and other information.
Enhanced Desktop Notifications
Desktop notifications are now available for WorldClient tasks and events. When a reminder is configured for an event or task, a pop-up window will display to alert the user.
ActiveSync Corrupt Message Notifications notify administrators if a particular message cannot be processed.
The ActiveSync Migration Client now supports the ability to select which folder types to migrate.
A new content filter option has been added which will quarantine the entire message when it contains a restricted attachment.
The Retry Queue configuration screen has a new checkbox which enables sending of a “successful delivery” DSN (delivery status notification message) any time a message is delivered which has previously been delayed and placed in the retry queue for whatever reason.
Options have been added to the Outlook Connector centralised management for local cache filename and attachments directory.
Our friends at MailStore have been hard at work to make their email archiving solution more secure while providing more flexible administrative features. With the release of MailStore version 10, users and administrators benefit from the following improvements.
Keeping Archive Data Safe & Secure
Full Encryption of Database & Audit Logs
MailStore has always stored archived email in encrypted format, but now, they take encryption a step further by encrypting the internal databases and audit logs. Now, in addition to the messages themselves being encrypted, metadata such as message subjects, senders, and recipients are also encrypted, as well as the archive folder structure.
Restricted archive access for administrators
By default, MailStore administrators will no longer be able to browse, search, or export email of other MailStore users as long as the compliance setting “Archive Access” (formerly known as E-mail preview) is set to “Block Access.”
Extra Cloud Backup Protection
MailStore now allows you to use a specific recovery key to prevent archive data from being accessed from other systems by unauthorized users. This is useful in situations where cloud storage backup locations are used.
Making Life Easier for Administrators
Automatic Updates with Email Notifications
MailStore now includes an automatic-update feature that notifies the administrator when a new version is available. This helps to ensure that you can always benefit from the latest feature set.
Flexible Storage Location Options
Administrators now have more options when configuring archive stores. Each component of an archive (email content, search indexes, databases) can now have its own storage location.
Many Other Improvements
These are just the highlights of MailStore’s new features. To benefit from all of its new features and enhancements, download MailStore 10 today!
A company’s greatest asset is its customers, and here at Alt-N, we strive to listen to our customers’ needs. A direct result of that effort was the creation of the Alt-N Idea Engine, which allows customers to submit feature requests and other ideas to improve our products. Many of these ideas have made their way into our products, and many more are being considered for future versions.
Recently, we introduced some exciting new features to MDaemon, including a flexible Remote Administration interface and enhanced security via DMARC (Domain-Based Message Authentication, Reporting, and Conformance). I’m pleased to announce that these and other great new features have now been added to SecurityGateway!
With the proliferation of handheld devices and an increasingly mobile workforce, users will benefit from an updated, responsive web interface that is optimized for mobile devices. The format of the information displayed is dependent on the size of the browser window, so whether you’re on a desktop PC, a tablet, or a mobile phone, the interface adjusts for a more user-friendly experience regardless of what type of device is used.
Enhanced Anti-Spoofing Support with DMARC
DMARC (Domain-Based Message Authentication, Reporting and Conformance), enables domain owners to direct the actions to take when handling messages purporting to be from their domain(s) but were not actually sent by them.
Bind Domain to Its Own IP address
For servers that have multiple IP addresses and multiple domains, each domain in SecurityGateway can now be bound to its own IP address. This allows messages from a specific domain to be sent only from its assigned IP address.
